¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español, nivel 2!
Queridos estudiantes, (Dear Students),
I am happy to welcome you (back?) to Newton South High School and to your Spanish 2 class! Even though the summer months passed all too quickly, I hope that you found them to be full of fun and relaxation. Doesn’t it feel just a little good to be back? J
I am very happy to be teaching this course! Although I have taught the Spanish 2 class for over 15 years now, we are debuting a brand new textbook this year, so I’ll be learning all the ins and outs of the program right alongside you! Please be patient with me as I get used to the new format. This is an exciting change for us all!
Our course this year will focus on improving your proficiency in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing in Spanish, as well as reinforcing awareness of the variety of cultures that exist within the Hispanic world. We will split our time practicing these skills to better prepare you for more advanced Spanish courses at South.
We will try to speak Spanish most of the time in class. If you don’t understand everything that’s going on, try not to get too frustrated. It is important to recognize that a certain level of frustration is what actually leads to learning – in all subjects. As odd as it sounds, when you struggle with something, you often learn it better than if it just came to you.
It is important to me and to the functioning of our group that everyone feel comfortable in class. Speaking a different language in front of others can be intimidating because we all make mistakes, and no one wants to sound “different” by attempting a new accent. It is crucial that we be patient with ourselves and tolerant of each other. Please encourage your classmates to speak Spanish in class.
The textbook for this course is Avancemos. You are being asked to purchase the accompanying workbook; I will get back to you with a price. Checks can be made out to Newton South High School; please mark “World Language” in the memo line. (Cash is also accepted, but discouraged for security reasons.) Please bring in money as soon as possible, as we will begin using them soon.
We will be working together these early day to formulate some class rules, but for now, I can briefly share some that I already have. I’d like to think they are obvious!
1. Please come to class prepared and ready to actively participate. Bring your materials: a place to take notes, a folder for hand-outs, a pen or pencil, and completed homework (including workbook, if necessary).
2. You will have homework almost every day. I check homework at the BEGINNING of every class. On time, completed homework earns a full 2 points (out of 2), partially completed earns 1 point, and a zero is a zero. I do not accept late homework, and zeros cannot be made up. When we have lengthier assignments, such as compositions, late homework is accepted, but points will be deducted for each day of lateness. You can always find updated homework lists on the class website.
3. Be on time for class. The attendance policy for the school will be enforced. Three tardies equals one cut; three cuts equal an N for the term. I am strict with this policy, because you cannot learn without being here and participating.
4. Please feel free to use my email address (on front) to contact me if you have questions or are absent. Finding out what you missed eases your re-entry into class.
5. If you are absent the day before a scheduled test or quiz, I will expect you to take it with the class unless we have made prior arrangements. Check our website for missed assignments!
An unexcused absence on the day of a test or quiz will result in
an automatic zero and a call to your Housemaster.
6. No cell phone use during class, unless I have given you permission. If I see it, I will hold it until the end of class. If you refuse to hand it over, your housemaster will be contacted.
7. Come to J Blocks! The days will be posted on our door.
8. Your grade will be calculated as follows: tests (30%), quizzes (20%), participation in class (15%), writing activities/projects (20%), homework (15%).
9. We will have a final exam in June worth 20% of your final grade. There is no mid-year exam for this course.
I am looking forward to getting to know you and to working with you this year.
I hope that you enjoy yourself while also working hard and learning a lot.
¡Buena suerte!
